Through Literacy in Action, YouthInk offers Writer's Workshop to Grades 3 through 7.
What is Literacy in Action?
Literacy in Action is a way to engage students using journalism as a tool to motivate and explore curriculum areas while developing literacy and communication skills.
Each workshop consists of six, one and a half hour sessions, where our Program Coordinator works with the teacher to teach the students how to research and write journalistic material. Our curriculum has been created by a current teacher; however we are always willing to work with whatever subject the students are currently learning. If you would like a literacy component added to emphasize and compliment what the students are currently learning, we are more than happy to accommodate!
In addition to learning how to write journalistic material, your students will also be able to publish their writing. After each workshop, YouthInk puts all of the articles together, along with various art work done by the students, and produces a Minizine magazine that students get to keep.
Various articles will also be published in our YouthinkIT Magazine that reaches all Calgary Public libraries, city parks and recreation facilities. We publish 10,000 copies of YouthinkIT twice a year and have built a readership of more than 20,000 youth, parents, teachers and community members. All editorial content is by youth for youth, making YouthinkIT a one-of-a-kind magazine.
If you teach grades 3 through 7, please consider our workshops as part of your curriculum. Our workshops include:
